Lycia means land of light. It is the name of an ancient region between the modern-day towns of Fethiye and Antalya. It is situated next to the glistening waters of the mediterranean where its rugged coastline is a feature of our biking tours. Inland we find dense forest covering coastal plains and steep mountain valleys. Further inland we can find high pastures ringed by the majestic Toros mountain peaks. In other words a magical land for biking!The land is settled by farmers, fishermen, shepherds and market gardeners. Until very recently most of these people lived a nomadic existence and many still retain an element of their nomadic life as they move their sheep and goats up to high pastures in the summer and back to the coast for the colder months. These are some of the most welcoming people you can meet. their generous hospitality is truly legendary.Lycia has a long and vigorous history. The name Lycia comes from the Hittite word Lukka and dates the settlement of the area back to at least 2,000 years BC. There are also a number of pre-historic sites in the area.
